Kokia Tunic-Yellow

Kokio. Hau heleula. A native shrubby. Hibiscus with bright red, orange flowers. An endemic genusof 4 species in the Hawaiian islands. All species are endangered and/or extinct.
Kokia cookii. Extinct in the wild, formerly endemic to Mauna Loa on the western end of Molokai. Now this species exists only marginally, grafted on to Kokia kauaiensis.
Kokia drynarioides.Very rare in dry forest at Puu Waawaa and Huehue, North Kona. Nearly extinct in the wild.
Kokia kauaiensis. Single remaining species of this genus surviving in the wild. Found in Koaloha Canyon, Paaiki, Kuia, Mahanaloa, Kalalau, Koaie valleys, western Kauai.
Kokia lanceolata. Extinct since the late1800s. Once found on the hills of Makapuu and Koko Head and in Wailupe valley, southeastern Oahu. Wood produced fine charcoal. Sap used to make red dye for fishnets.
